What is Beltane?

What is Beltane?

Spring brings about a lot of changes – green grass, sunny skies and later sunsets. That’s why it’s the perfect time to celebrate Beltane.
Beltane is a celebration of the earth and the planting season that takes place on May 1. Another name for it is May Day.
Ancient farmers wanted to ensure fertility in livestock and protect them too in upcoming months. Fertility and love are celebrated in people too. Spring brings out the best in people and what a beautiful time to celebrate it.
Gone are the days of dancing around the maypole into the late hours of the night illuminated by a bonfire. However, you can still celebrate the upcoming good weather and growing season in various different modern ways.
The original May Day event usually ended with a bonfire – so get out the fire pit or sit at your fireplace with your friends and make summer plans. Have a few drinks or snacks if you want.
Bake a honey cake, to celebrate the bees doing their job this upcoming spring and summer.
Take a nice herbal soak in a tub, under the stars or in your tub inside. Imagine spring filling your senses.
Make flower/vegetable plant baskets and deliver them to family and loved ones. It’s almost planting season and it’s a gift that will be practical and thoughtful.
Write love letters and set up a date with someone you admire. This holiday is all about fertility and love – in the land and within the people who share it.
Plant native wildflowers and plants. The pollinators will thank you!
Make a meal with any seasonal vegetables and invite family and friends to share it. Break the bread and make plans.
However you decide to celebrate and get out there it’s up to you.
Have a blessed Beltane and a wonderful May Day.
