Mass. Blue Ribbon Calf Sale coming soon
I am Maddy Poitras, an active Junior member in the seven major dairy breeds associations. Every year the event I most look forward to, which starts the show season, is the Massachusetts Blue Ribbon Calf Sale.
I’ve been going to the sale every year and working it for the last five years. Working the sale gives me a sense of pride. Every year the Massachusetts Blue Ribbon Calf Sale has around 65 consignments. Having all those people entrust you with their calves for the next four days is just a great feeling. It puts a smile on your face watching people walk through the aisle of calves talking about how well they look and helping people find calves that will be perfect for their herd.
Then on sale morning, you get to be in the middle of all the excitement. Listening to all the bids fly is thrilling. But throughout the week it also teaches the kids responsibility. At the end of the day it isn’t just a fun social event. It’s a business.
It teaches you to get up early, go to bed late, working all week with more than 70 calves, making sure they get out looking their best. The sale also prepares you for when you are older if you want to continue the show circuit. (Personally, I do.)
This sale has prepared me so well to go out to the shows and work hard, and get my cows and others’ out to look their best.
Another great learning opportunity for the dairy industry that the Massachusetts Blue Ribbon Calf Sale provides is attending our educational clinics on March 20. For the sale, come join us on March 21 at 11 a.m. in the Mallary Building at Eastern States Exposition (the Big E fairgrounds), our generous host in West Springfield, MA.
Whether you’re just starting your herd or working on growing it, the Massachusetts Blue Ribbon Calf Sale is your place in New England to be.
