Looking for a paving contractor this spring?

Here’s some no-nonsense advice from a pro.

When it comes to hiring a paving contractor, retired industry veteran Ricky Villamaino has a wealth of insight to share. As the former president of Villamaino Paving Company in East Longmeadow, MA, Ricky spent decades in the business helping homeowners turn damaged driveways and worn walkways into sturdy, smooth surfaces. His advice? Narrow down just where you’re looking.

Ricky’s first tip: Try a reputable online directory. “Angi.com – what used to be Angie’s List – is a great place to begin your search,” he said. “You can read real reviews from past customers, compare ratings and get a feel for a contractor’s track record for quality, dependability and timeliness.”

But Ricky is quick to point out that nothing beats old-fashioned word-of-mouth. “Ask your friends, family and neighbors who they’ve used recently,” he suggested. “If someone down the road just had their driveway redone, stop and ask them how it went. You’ll always get the most honest feedback from people you personally know and trust.”

While it might be tempting to go with the first contractor who seems reliable, Ricky strongly encouraged getting multiple estimates. “Always get three quotes,” he advised. “Even if the first one feels right, it’s worth seeing how others compare. You’ll learn more about pricing, materials and the scope of work just by talking to a few different people. In the long run, you’ll see that it’ll be worth it to put in that little extra time to see how one contractor’s price stacks up against what else is out there.”

Taking the time to do your homework pays off. With a mix of digital tools and real-life conversations, you can make a confident, informed decision. Follow Ricky’s no-nonsense tips, and you’ll be well on your way to hiring a contractor who delivers quality work – without the headaches.
