Holiday gift ideas to keep farmers safe all year long

The holiday season is a perfect time to show your loved ones how much you care. This year, why not give them something that helps keep them safe and healthy on the farm? The Upper Midwest Agricultural Safety & Health Center (UMASH)put together a list of farm safety gifts that combine practicality with thoughtfulness – gifts that keep giving all year long.

Here’s a quick list of a few holiday gift ideas to help keep your loved ones safe and healthy on the farm:

Personal Protective Equipment: Equip your loved ones with essential protective gear to keep them safe. Consider reflective vests for visibility, shielded safety goggles, glasses or face shields for eye protection, earplugs or earmuffs for hearing protection and respirators to guard against gases, vapors, dust and fumes.

Emergency Preparedness: Be ready for unexpected events by gifting items like first aid kits, fire extinguishers to keep in buildings and vehicles for fire emergencies and gas monitors to detect dangerous gases such as manure gas in confined spaces. These tools can be lifesavers in critical moments.

Roadway Safety Supplies: Help them stay safe on the road by improving their visibility with reflective slow-moving vehicle (SMV) emblems and winter emergency car kits. For off-road activities, well-fitting durable helmets make a perfect gift to help ensure safe ATV and UTV use.

Cold Weather Wear: Warm winter gear is always a thoughtful gift. Items like insulated gloves and hats, thick socks and weather-resistant layers will help keep them warm and protected from cold stress during winter tasks.

Farm Shop Safety Tools: Prevent slips, trips and falls by creating a safer work environment with anti-slip mats, extension cord reels and durable flashlights or headlamps to brighten dark spaces.

Outdoor Gear: Plan ahead for summer safety! Help them stay safe and healthy when working outside with insect repellents to keep ticks and mosquitos away, sunblock and wide-brim hats for sun safety, cooling towels and a reusable water bottle when working in the heat and insulated lunch boxes to eat well to stay well.
