The New York Ayrshire Club is pleased to announce that Samuel Starceski, as the 2013 calf scholarship recipient. Samuel is the 14-year-old son of Paul and Robin Starceski.  The Starceski family farm is in Sherman, NY. Samuel’s responsibilities on the family farm are to do the heifer barn chores. This consist of bedding, feeding and giving them water. He also helps with milking and feeding the calves in the hutches. Samuel has been a 4-H member for five years, he has shown dairy, goats and poultry at the Chautauqua County Fair. Samuel also participates in 4-H dairy judging and showmanship clinics. He has a great interest in hunting and trapping and helps teach elementary students at the annual Conservation Field Days.
Samuel purchased his calf from Jackson Hill Farm, The Atherton Family in Greenwood, NY. The calf he chose is Jackson Hill Monocle Velvet and is sired by Lone-Birch BB Kellogg Monocle-ET.
This year’s Calf Scholarship was sponsored by Cargill Animal Nutrition, Batavia, NY. Cargill, gives back to the local communities in many ways. With over 400 employees and 16 locations, they donated approximately $230,000 to various organizations and charitable groups last crop year. These donations included our United Way Campaign fund, the Dairy Challenge, various educational groups and Cargill’s CHIPs program.
The New York Ayrshire Club members would like to wish him the very best with his calf. We would like to thank the other applicants and encourage them to apply again next year. The Scholarship is open to all youth in New York State who has an interest in raising an Ayrshire calf. The purpose of the Calf Scholarship Award Program is to select a youth who is worthy of the award and to provide money that can be used to help purchase a Registered Ayrshire Calf. The program offers the opportunity to a youth who has demonstrated the interest and ability to develop the calf to her fullest potential and who will also grow through this project.
