With agricultural fairs in full swing across the Northeast, UConn Extension has released a new fact sheet to help fairgoers stay healthy while enjoying animal exhibits. The resource, available at http://s.uconn.edu/animals, emphasizes the importance of practicing proper hygiene after interacting with animals to prevent the spread of zoonotic diseases.
The fact sheet was authored by Sara Tomis and Jennifer Cushman, both of whom bring extensive experience in agriculture and youth development. Cushman, the state 4-H program leader, noted, “Fairs are a wonderful opportunity for youth to showcase their hard work with animals, and for the public to learn more about agriculture. This fact sheet helps ensure that everyone can enjoy these events safely by following simple hygiene practices.”
Designed for fair visitors, exhibitors, families and fair organizers, the fact sheet outlines key steps to reduce the risk of illness, including:
- Washing hands thoroughly after touching animals or being in animal areas
- Avoiding eating or drinking in animal exhibit areas
- Supervising young children closely around animals
- Recognizing signs of illness in animals and reporting concerns
